The word doula comes from Greek and means ‘Woman’s servant’. As a Birth Doula I actually am at your disposal before your baby is ready to be born. As a doula I provide up to date information on all the options available to you as a pregnant woman and family. This includes information during pregnancy such as tests, childbirth techniques, hospital procedures, labor progress, and more. In addition during visits we can practice your chosen childbirth techniques and talk about any concerns, hopes, or anything related to your upcoming birth and new baby.
Once you are in labor as soon as you need me you call me and I come either to your house or to your chosen place of birth. It is highly recommended to stay home as long as possible before heading in to a hospital. Once I am with you I will help you as needed in providing physical, mental, and emotional support to ease labor. Remember that your body is doing the equivalent of climbing a huge mountain; it takes a lot of work and strength and concentration but that doesn’t mean it has to be agonizing. I will help you in working through labor to reduce any discomfort. If questions or complications come up I will offer you guidance on what questions to ask your care provider so as to make the best decision for you and your family. I will work with your chosen birth professionals to provide a calm environment for you and your baby.
After baby has arrived I will stay with you until breastfeeding is established and/or you feel comfortable with me leaving. This is generally an hour to two hours. Before this point I will have given you information on what common newborn procedures are so that you can be prepared to either accept or deny them at your pleasure. If there are problems with delivery I will stay longer to make sure you are comfortable. The next day I will call to check up on you and see if you need another visit before I come out at 5 days to 1 week after the birth. Here we will go over your birth experience and discuss any concerns or upsets you have, work on any breastfeeding issues, and discuss things like infant sleep patterns, vaccines, circumcision, and other relevant topics. From this point on you will be able to call me 24/7 for 4 weeks with any pressing worries or concerns. I will also visit you at 2-4 weeks post partum to talk, check up on how you and baby are doing, and answer any questions.
